Sunny Day, Sweeping the Clouds Away…
As noted in the NextGen Research report “The Global Photovoltaic Market: Sunny Prospects for Energy Independence Through Solar Power,” the photovoltaic (PV) market was being held up by shortages of silicon feedstock, which is used to fabricate crystalline-based PV cells. The rapid expansion of the solar industry resulted in an acute shortage of silicon feedstock starting in 2005, accompanied by enormous hikes in its price (it didn’t help that the semiconductor industry was dependent on the same silicon feedstock).
