Greening Buildings
Did you see that the tallest building in the United States is going green? That’s right, the 110-story Willis Tower (once known as the Sears Tower) is adding wind turbines and solar panels, as well as upgrading its cooling, heating and lighting systems, and replacing all 16,000 windows with energy-efficient models. The $350-million renovation will take five years to complete, but will cut energy consumption in the building by 80% (the equivalent of 150,000 barrels of oil a year), and water use by 40% (24 million gallons a year). The project also will create 3,600 jobs.
