Opportunities for Revenue Growth in Legacy Pay Television Business
Satellite and cable TV are among the oldest and most important pay television platforms in many countries around the world. However, in recent years, satellite and cable television growth has perpetually been surpassed by IPTV. Currently, there are approximately 600 commercial IPTV launches worldwide. And the total number of IPTV subscribers at the end of 2008 exceeded 21 million users, with growth remaining positive despite bleak economic conditions. However, while we expect to see greater momentum in the IPTV segment in the years to come as operators continue rolling out IPTV as part of their multi-play strategies, they will reach a stage where focusing on pure service ideas will not be enough to retain subscribers.
