Ultra-mobile devices (UMDs) are computing devices centered on delivering Internet connectivity and the web to users in a more portable manner than PCs. UMDs reside between the smartphone and laptop in terms of size and power. The most widely-deployed UMD is the netbook computer. Netbooks are a newer category of personal computer, similar to a laptop computer, but smaller, more portable, and less expensive with "value" as the key selling proposition. Ideal for email, web browsing, and basic software applications, netbooks are finding tremendous success in developed telecommunications markets as companion devices to existing desktop and laptop computers. This study explores the netbook market with an emphasis on platform vendors, adoption of commercial products, and forecasts for unit shipments and revenues through 2015.
