Retrofit Market Offers an Alternate Road to the Hybrid Experience
One of the barriers to wide scale implementation of hybrid powertrains into commercial and consumer vehicles is the initial cost premium, and the incremental cost is likely to remain high until volumes are sufficiently large for companies to invest in mass production tooling. One solution to this problem is to supply the retrofit market, which is a good way to demonstrate to OEMs that the technology is ready for production. Another is for an OEM to partner with a smaller, specialist supplier to handle initial production runs.
