Is the Question Wi-Fi versus Femto for FMC now Defunct? Should It Be Wi-Fi + Femto?
December 2007 was a whirlwind of femtocell-based conferences that, at face value, did not impart any radical thinking. However, reflecting on the conferences as one complete exercise, a consolidated picture begins to take shape: only six months ago, the market’s focus was on technology innovation and how to differentiate from existing fixed mobile solutions such as UMA and VCC. During these conferences, the emphasis began shifting from “How do we make this work from a technology standpoint?” to “How do we make money out of the exercise?” ABI Research argues that the critical question – the answer to which will dictate whether femtocells become a unilateral fixture in the FMC home – is “how can we incorporate available technologies to provide a pervasive service bundle that drives mass uptake?”
