In May 2008, home control technology vendor iControl announced that it had been selected to develop applications for Apple’s iPhone. While the announcement garnered considerable mention in the earned media, the iControl announcement is actually the second introduction of smartphone-based home control functionality. At the very end of April 2008, HAI (Home Automation, Inc) announced the availability of its “Snap-Link Mobile” software for Windows Mobile–based smartphones. The two announcements form what ABI Research believes is the leading edge of a general trend to introduce home control UI (User Interface) functionality in smartphones.
