Feed-in Tariffs in the United States

For a number of years, individual states in the United States have been unable to introduce feed-in tariffs (FITs) for renewable energies due to fears of running afoul of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Federal Power Act (FPA). However, this all changed last year. The FERC clarified a ruling under which states can order utilities to pay different rates for energy generation for different renewable energy technologies. In this specific case, the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) had ordered utilities to offer fixed price contracts for Combined Heat and Power projects of less than 20 MW.
