A fundamental shift in mobile data communications is about to begin. Mobile network operators have made headlines due to poor performance and declining user experience as millions of new devices look to connect to the Internet anytime and anywhere. The carriers simply can’t scale network capacity fast enough to meet the demand. Instead of tackling mobile data shortcomings by throwing more network infrastructure capacity at the problem, network operators are looking to an intermediary communications device called mobile hotspot routers to alleviate these challenges. The router enables the typical user to connect multiple Wi-Fi devices to the carrier’s mobile network over a single mobile broadband subscription. This solution relieves some of the network congestion bottleneck and at the same time allows more devices to become Internet-connected. This report examines the market for mobile hotspot routers that provide high data rate or broadband WWAN connectivity to Wi-Fi-enabled computing, communications, and consumer electronics devices. A market description and key technology dynamics are provided, as well as the competitive landscape and profiles of selected ecosystem participants. Market forecasts have been developed for inclusion by purchasing entity, geographic region, technology standard, and air interface protocol.
