NFC Mobile Payments Momentum Slows Again: Perhaps 2013 Is the Year?

Last week, “Near Field Communications World” wrote an interesting piece based on a session at Google I/O called “How To NFC.” The session might have sparked the biggest NFC mobile payment news of 2011. According to Google NFC team members Nick Pelly and Jeff Hamilton, the Android Gingerbread release does supply third party APIs to NFC capabilities, but it does not support NFC APIs for card emulation (mobile payments). Furthermore, the next release for Android (“Ice Cream Sandwich”) that will launch most likely at the end of 2011 will also not support NFC APIs for mobile payments.
