Low-power 4G Spectrum: Ofcom's Bold New Proposal

The UK regulator Ofcom has announced spectrum auctions for the 800 MHz and 2600 MHz bands; the auctions are expected in the first half of 2012. These auctions are primarily intended for the roll-out of 4G LTE services. Ofcom has laid out its proposals for the spectrum auction and invites responses, with a May 31, 2011 deadline. This is the largest spectrum auction in the UK since the 3G auction in 2000, with around 250 MHz of spectrum becoming available. That equates to three-quarters of the spectrum currently in use and more than 80% of what was awarded in 2000.
