Moan about MTR Cuts Makes Europe's Telcos Sound Like Old Dull Utilities

Not long ago, the Financial Times ran a story with a mildly misleading but at the same time revealing title: “Regulator demands steep cut in mobile revenues”. The title is misleading in the sense that weighing in and dictating what is the appropriate level for companies’ revenues is not something industry regulators are mandated to do. But it is also very revealing because that’s effectively what European telecoms regulators end up doing these days. That’s not their fault, however – blame instead the telcos and their outdated business models.
