HTML5 is not a single technology, but a collection of improvements to HTML, the primary markup language of the Internet. It is essentially a major overhaul to the World Wide Web, with the intent of improving multimedia applications and redesigning the web for a much broader range of devices, particularly mobile devices. More than 25 innovative HTML5/advanced web features, discussed in more detail in this report, are in various stages of development and implementation. While the official line from the W3C is that the HTML5 standard will not be complete until 2020, ABI Research believes most of these 25 features will become widely used at varying intervals within the next 5-7 years. The introduction of HTML5 features will fundamentally, dramatically change the Web, as browsers will be able to access the computer's or mobile’s capabilities, such as file read/write, etc. The web will become smarter, more personalized, and intuitive. HTML5 features will enable the web to challenge native applications in terms of rich user experiences.
This report is a study of HTML5, measuring its impact on mobile devices, web developers, computing companies and other players in the Internet ecosystem. Drivers and barriers to the growth of HTML5 are explored. Forecasts include the market acceptance (via mobile devices) of 25 HTML5 features by region.
