Why a Sprint-T-Mobile Merger Makes Sense Now

Sprint and rival wireless operator T-Mobile USA have a dance going to see if merging the two companies would make for a good marriage – and this is not the first time the two have tangoed. Both have struggled to hang on to customers in the face of stiff competition from Verizon Wireless and AT&T. If a transaction can be worked out, the merged company would have the necessary scale to hang with the top two players. Sprint is the third-largest U.S. operator, with 50 million subscribers, and T-Mobile is fourth, with 34 million. But a deal is not imminent, as the two tussle over price and ownership, according to published reports.
