The mainstream media coverage of 2D mobile barcodes continues to expand and, as a result, an interesting story or angle pops onto the radar every now and again. The tagline of one video news story alone captured my attention and merited an instant click on the video link. It read: “Barcode City.” What exactly is a barcode city? According to the Fox News story, Microsoft is partnering with local government and business in Lakewood Ranch, Florida to tag the city with Microsoft’s proprietary 2D barcodes, making it the first “barcode city” in America. What does the process of tagging a city actually entail? What are the benefits for consumers and businesses? How indicative is this case of where we might be headed in the near future?
