Mercedes Lights the ADAS Fuse

In February 2011, Mercedes-Benz issued a press release that seemed innocuous enough on the surface. A new safety system would be available on its new upcoming A- and B-Class vehicles. The significance is that the safety system Mercedes-Benz is offering is the radar-based collision warning and adaptive brake assist system that until last year was only available on the E-Class and higher. Mercedes-Benz accomplished a subtle dig at Volvo by contrasting the radar system’s performance under all driving conditions with other systems already in the market that are designed to only minimize the effects of minor collisions.
