The adoption of global standards is a major driver for the adoption of telematics solutions as well as a critical success factor for the future of the consumer and commercial telematics industries. It reduces fragmentation, creating a dynamic and open telematics ecosystem, while at the same time lowering development costs. The main government-initiated telematics standard is the EU’s pan-European eCall emergency calling initiative. Industry standards include Nokia’s Terminal Mode and BMW’s Next Generation Telematics Protocol.

This Research Report discusses the relevance and benefits of telematics standards and provides a critical assessment of the main initiatives. It also provides forecasts of Terminal Mode users.
