Media tablets promise a better user experience than productivity-focused laptop computers and communication applications on diminutive smartphone screens. During the first half of 2010, most PC and mobile device OEMs announced plans to deliver touch screen-based handheld devices to satisfy the need for content consumption in and around the home.

Apple jumped out to an early lead in 2Q 2010 with 3 million shipments of the company’s iPad slate. However, lack of competition has hindered the awareness and adoption of the mobile device form-factor, relegating media tablets to a luxury item in only the most broadband-enabled and wealthy countries.

How did the balance of 2010 shape up for this nascent ultra-mobile device segment?
