The end of the format war, declining prices, and increased penetration of HDTVs have all contributed to the recent growth in Blu-ray player sales, and will continue to support the technology in the future. Falling ASPs in particular have contributed to the increase in Blu-ray player adoption, as the pricing now lends itself to DVD player replacements on TVs below the primary screen. With this growth potential in mind, ABI Research forecasts a 40%+ CAGR from 2009 to 2015. While ugprades and DVD player replacement will continue to drive this market, there are other motivators as well, particularly as consumers shift from physical media delivery to online.

Internet-connected Blu-ray players, along with 3D, are two such value contributors that are creating new opportunities, along with the launch of services such as Hulu Plus, the spread of Netflix streaming services, and the recent entrances by the retailers. This Research Report discusses how online content is quickly becoming an important facet of the video market, and shows how the importance of this trend will grow as long as consumers continue to shift away from physical media.
