Wireless adoption within industrial automation is a not new, but it has been limited by the proprietary nature and cost of the products available. Over the past few years, support for a standard silicon platform and standardized communications protocols have emerged to boost WSN (wireless sensor networks) within industrial automation. Even now that standardization on IEEE 802.15.4 silicon is taking place there is still concern regarding the multiple protocols that may yet be adopted using that silicon.
This Research Report examines the two key protocols that use 802.15.4 silicon - WirelessHART and ISA100.11a. It also considers the impetus and potential of efforts underway to bring together WirelessHART and ISA100.11a, and draws conclusions about the market potential for separate and unified specifications.
