Sony Ericsson Xperia Play…the End of Portable Gaming?

Sony Ericsson has officially announced the Xperia Play, an Android based phone running Gingerbread (Android 2.3) with game controls, coinciding with Sony’s earlier announcements regarding the PlayStation Suite that brings PlayStation content (initially PS1 classic titles) to Android devices. While these products and platforms seem to portend the eventual wholesale transition from portable to mobile platforms, neither completely or adequately answers the central question: does the portable game player have a future as a standalone device, separated from mobility?
