Nokia Throws in the Software Development Towel: Microsoft Picks It Up

February 11, Nokia and Microsoft announced a strategic alliance, whereby Nokia will use Windows Phone 7 as its primary OS for smartphones. Although many details remain to hash out, the two technology giants will seek to merge their “ecosystems” into one cohesive content and services behemoth and form the “3rd mobile ecosystem” alongside Apple and Google. Symbian will be phased out over the next two years, although Nokia still plans to sell another 150 million Symbian smartphones. Nokia will also be putting the nearly-complete Meego OS on the back burner, planning to use Meego more as a technology incubation lab than an important strategic asset.
