Small Cells and Mobile World Congress: What Can We Expect?

This year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is expected to be swamped with news on small cells. “Small cell” is an umbrella term including femtocells, picocells, microcells, Wi-Fi, and relays. While we’ve seen a decent amount of activity around femtocells at the show in past years, small cells are likely to upstage them this year. We also expect the big boys of wireless infrastructure, the Tier-One OEMs, to steal a lot of the limelight surrounding small cells, something we haven’t really seen at past shows. Apart from the usual announcements about LTE, WCDMA, enterprise, metro/rural femto, picocells and microcells, expectations are that this year Barcelona will truly embrace small cells, allowing a stronger, bigger ecosystem to develop.
