India's Aadhar Project

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has been embarking on one of the largest national ID projects in the world. Also known as the Aadhar project, each Indian citizen is being assigned a unique 12 digit identity number – for life. The number is directly linked to each individual’s personal information based on biometrics captured and stored in a central nationwide database. Is the amount of hype surrounding this project justified? Will the project have benefits for India’s citizens?
