Reaping Digital Dividends: Vodafone's Rural LTE Service Goes Live in Germany

In December 2010, Germany got its first commercial LTE service when Vodafone launched four service packages, ranging from 29.99 euro ($39) per month for 3.2Mbps (incl. 5GB of data) to 69.99 euro per month for 50Mbps service (incl. 30GB). Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile is set to launch its own LTE packages in April and Telefonica’s O2 is expected to follow suit in the course of 2011. The fourth operator, KPN’s E-Plus, has not confirmed its LTE commitments, having indicated that it will for now be focused on HSPA+. The issues raised by Germany’s LTE service are not insignificant; the deployment has implications ranging from public policy to net neutrality.
