Virtualization is the practice of creating a virtual version of a device, machine, or resource, and then operating the virtual machine on a physical host machine. Often, multiple virtual machines are created and operate simultaneously on a single piece of hardware, allowing for more efficient utilization of resources. Typically, virtual machines have all the capabilities of physical machines, and interaction with virtual resources is the same as the operation of physical resources. Desktops, servers, storage devices, and even networks and applications are all routinely virtualized in IT today.

This study examines the market for Desktop Virtualization in the enterprise, that is, the replacement of physical personal computers in the enterprise with virtual PCs that run on a server, and may be accessed remotely through a desktop or thin-client PC, or other desktop or mobile device. The report examines the technologies behind Desktop Virtualization, as well as the Desktop Virtualization ecosystem and key trends, drivers and challenges within that marketplace. Forecasts are provided for total Virtualized Desktop shipments, ASPs and revenue for the period from 2009 through 2016, on an annual and cumulative global basis, segmented by major global region. Finally, key vendor profiles are provided.
