Femtocell core network gateways are an essential part of any femtocell deployment. This report primarily focuses on femtocell aggregation gateways and security gateways, but also touches upon convergence gateways/servers, which are necessary components for CDMA femtocells. Aggregation gateways provide concentrator functionality for both control plane and user plane femtocell traffic, while security gateways provide IPSec termination, DDoS protection, and other security mechanisms for the operator core network. Convergence gateway/server emulates a MSC and IMS application server allowing for 2G/3G voice service in a SIP/IMS environment, essentially connecting non-IMS (2G/3G MSC switches) and IMS networks. All three elements are deployed for residential femtocells but can also be deployed for enterprise and metro femtocell deployments. This report focuses on some of the key product and deployment trends for femtocell core gateways and provides strategic recommendations for vendors in this marketplace. This report also provides forecasts and sizing for the security gateway market, which is one of the most important and mandatory elements for femtocell networks and is becoming much more essential in LTE femtocells as they begin to get deployed in metro and enterprise locations.

What Questions Does This Report Answer?

  • How does the emergence of enterprise and metro femtocells impact the deployment and architecture of femtocell core gateways?
  • Will consumer, enterprise, and metro femtocells have separate core network architectures?
  • Which amongst the three markets of consumer, enterprise, and metro will see the largest revenue opportunity for femtocell core gateways?
  • How will LTE femtocells impact the deployment of femtocell core gateways?
  • What are the OEM strategies with regards to consolidation of femtocell and macrocell core network infrastructure?
  • What are some of the key value add features being seen in femtocell core gateways?
  • How does the femtocell core gateway vendor space vary in terms of feature sets being provided?
  • Does support for I-WLAN have an important role going forward?
