Cloud computing is revolutionizing the digital music industry by shifting the consumer focus from ownership of songs to purchasing access to them in the form of on-demand streaming services. At the same time, the cloud is also being used to store owned tracks and albums and develop services that help listeners to discover a whole new range of music. Mobile handsets are a key driver of this change, due to their inherent portability and uniquely high penetration rate among consumers. This study examines cloud music services specifically from the mobile perspective. The qualitative part of the study includes descriptions of available services, analyses of market drivers and inhibitors, and an overview of the main technology issues. The quantitative part provides forecasts of revenues, customer bases and price points for mobile music streaming subscriptions, covering the period of 2011-2016. It also presents data on relevant consumer trends gathered by ABI Research’s Bi-Annual Consumer Technology Barometer, which was conducted in the third quarter of 2010.
