Discrete devices have dominated high-power RF amplifiers for cellular and mobile wireless infrastructure network equipment since the inception of the industry. High-power monolithic RFICs are now challenging that positioning. RFICs have been around for a long time, but they historically have been too expensive and their power levels too low to make a profound impact on the market. Pricing and power levels are now competitive to discrete parts. High-power RFICs have become a powerful disruptive force to this important market segment. This study examines the rapid increase in the use of high-power RFICs for use in RF power amplifiers, which are used in wireless infrastructure network equipment, and how their adoption will affect the high-power RF device market for this segment. The ubiquitous explosion in wireless data has also changed the high-power RFICs' positioning in the topology of the wireless infrastructure RFPA, and that is analyzed in this study as well.
