Driver distraction and inattention is known to be the cause of a significant percentage of road traffic accidents. One way to address this issue is to equip vehicles with sensors that can constantly monitor the area in front of the vehicle and warn the driver if a potential collision is detected, and then apply the brakes if no action is taken immediately. With radar technology becoming cheaper and the performance and reliability of camera and lidar systems improving, the market for collision warning and mitigation looks set for a period of substantial growth. Some sharing of technology with other driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control and parking assistance will help to broaden appeal and add value for the consumer.

This study examines the technical and commercial advances that have led to the current availability of collision warning systems in the market, and provides world region forecasts though 2016 for both collision warning and pedestrian detection features. An overview of the functionality available by vehicle manufacturer and supplier capability is also provided, along with detailed discussion of the key factors affecting the market.
