Rovi and Apple Licensing Agreement

Apple's recent hardware updates for its iPods and Apple TV have been followed up by additional news regarding a link between middleware provider Rovi and Apple. On September 20th, Rovi filed an 8-K with the SEC which simply described “a multi-year agreement with Apple Inc. whereby Apple shall license intellectual property from the Company”. Despite specific details of the business relationship not having been revealed, Rovi’s stock price jumped to all-time highs following the announcement. The real question is what would drive this enthusiasm for a deal that may offer very little in terms of revenue gains for Rovi?
