Apple AirPlay: Changing the Game for the Connected Home?

Recent announcements from Apple have gained a lot of attention within the industry and media, primarily those about hardware. We believe that one part of the announcements didn’t get as much attention, but could have a significant impact on the connected home. Apple revealed details about AirPlay, a new proprietary protocol for direct streaming audio and video content within the home, utilizing Bonjour technologies. The company says that it will open up AirPlay access by offering the software development kit to third-party vendors. The net effect should be a significant increase in the development of networked/streaming audio and video devices and content within the home.
