Clear definitions and segmentation are critical tools to the accurate sizing and forecasting of any market. However, since nearly every industry has product segments that don’t have universally adopted definitions, how ABI defines particular segments are questions we commonly field. Industry press releases are often intentionally vague about what the service offering is, and how it works – choosing to instead provide the optimistic message that “We’re offering everything our customers have asked for”. While reading between the lines to understand what is being offered takes experience – and often requires a round of Q&A – having clear definitions can also assure that the right questions are asked. The following are definitions of key terms, and questions we consider when classifying a service.
