Standards-based wireless sensor network adoption within the home has long been synonymous with home automation systems. Increasingly WSN will deployed within these systems as the technology suits the same broad home application areas that home automation has long supported - energy management, home entertainment control, healthcare and security, but they will also spearhead a more ad-hoc, consumer led deployment and adoption of wireless automation within homes.

Driving this is growing adoption of standard WSN technology. Standardization brings significantly expands the size of the addressable market as well as cutting costs for enabling wireless communications opening up the potential for broad interoperability across multiple devices. Home WSN uptake will drive change within home automation as well as across multiple home control, entertainment, and consumer electronics devices. The broad potential for bringing wireless control to a range of home devices will draw players from multiple industries to offer connectivity as well as support for the enabled applications.

This report examines the specific opportunities for standardized low power sensor and actuator networks leveraging IEEE 802.15.4 PHY semiconductors within the residential marketplace.
