Are You a Volt, or a Leaf?

By now we’re all aware that General Motors has announced that pricing for Chevrolet’s Volt, due out in the United States in November 2010, will start at $41,000. Because GM describes the Volt as an “electric car,” the media is simplistically comparing it to the Nissan Leaf, which will have a base price about $8,000 lower than that of the Volt when it’s released in December 2010. (Thanks to federal subsidies, both vehicles will actually cost you about $7,500 less). However, this is not a fair, apples-to-apples comparison, because the Volt and Leaf are different types of vehicles that should appeal to different customer bases.
