Gemalto Acquires Cinterion: Is a Platform Strategy in the Offing?

In June Gemalto, a global digital security solution provider, announced that it was acquiring leading cellular M2M embedded module vendor Cinterion Wireless Modules GmbH. The €163 million all-cash purchase should close by the end of August and will combine Cinterion’s 335 employees, mostly located in Germany, with the much larger Gemalto organization of over 10,000 employees, €1.65 billion in 2009 revenue, and a presence in more than 41 countries. What are the implications for Cinterion and Gemalto going forward?
