Femtocell Data Offload as a Third Party Telco Service

At Femtocell World Summit 2010 in June, a lot of talk circulated about mobile offload and the advantages of using femtocells as an offload tool. The debate mostly focused on how femtocells compare to Wi-Fi. As usual, the arguments rested on connectivity, licensed versus unlicensed spectrum, dual-mode Wi-Fi phones, and cost of access points. However, as offload is becoming a hot topic and as the “data tsunami” is beginning to reach operators’ shores, the role of the third-party telco could become more important than previously imagined.
