Should We Trust the Environment to An Actor?

Actors often speak out on environmental issues. They often receive media attention for doing so, because the media recognize them, and figure that we the people will pay attention whenever a Famous Name is mentioned. At this writing, oil continues to leak into the Gulf of Mexico at rates variously estimated by BP (the company responsible) as 5,000 barrels per day to more than 210,000 barrels per day, and sometimes more. BP, whose Deepwater Horizon oil rig collapsed into the Gulf, allowing the wellhead underneath to release its oil into Gulf waters, is slowly trying to stop the oil from gushing into the Gulf through means like siphoning off a portion of the oil still spewing forth from the damaged wellhead, skimming oil from the water’s surface, trying to burn the oil from the surface of the water, and dumping chemical dispersants into the Gulf to try to protect the coastline from the approaching, growing oil slick. Enter Kevin Costner.
