The development of green nanotechnologies, or clean energy-efficient applications incorporating nanotechnologies, has created an emerging market. A new generation of highly efficient environmental technologies - from solar technologies such as semiconducting nanocrystals that generate electricity from sunlight, to water purification systems using polymer nanospheres to detect hazardous materials in water - has created significant opportunities for energy and oil companies.
This study examines the markets for solar (photovoltaic) energy creation, for wind power generation, and for fuel cell power. It provides forecasts of global investment in renewable energy generation (specific to solar/photovoltaic and wind power), and the potential savings that would be provided by integrating nano-engineered materials into the manufacture of photovoltaic cells, wind turbines and wind turbine blades. In support of those forecasts, the study provides forecasts for grid-installed solar (photovoltaic) power generation capacity, global investment in solar (photovoltaic) power generation, global solar (photovoltaic) cell shipments, the potential savings for solar (phovoltaic) power generation from the incorporation of nanotechnologies, global investment in wind energy, wind turbine shipments, grid-installed wind power, the potential savings to wind power generation from the incorporation of nanotechnologies, and fuel cell shipments, for the forecast period of 2010 through 2015, on an annual and cumulative basis, and segmented by major global region.
