Wal-Mart Entering the OTT Market

When ABI Research’s Digital Home Practice Director Jason Blackwell wrote one of the first reports on connected TVs in 2005, he speculated that one of the best ways to generate consumer awareness and demand for these devices was for major retailers of DVDs to offer a video download service, branded on the TV. Now, in the past few months, two major retailers have announced that they are creating partnerships that do just that. In November 2009, Best Buy and CinemaNow announced a service that would be available on Best Buy’s Insignia-branded TVs. And, on February 22nd, Wal-Mart announced plans to acquire over-the-top (OTT) video service provider Vudu.
