The total market for finished barcode scanners reached approximately $1.27 billion in 2009, with revenues of $1.4 billion projected for 2010, representing growth of 9.5% over 2009 figures. Growth over the next five years will likely remain steady as the market rebounds. ABI Research forecasts a 7.1% CAGR from 2010 to 2015. The barcode scanner market is expected to reach nearly $2 billion in 2015.
This Market Data product gives a breakdown analysis of major product categories and classes of barcode scanners as well as of the verticals they support. Regional spending is also reported.
ABI Research groups barcode scanners into two main primary form factors/types:
• Handheld barcode scanners
• Stationary/Fixed-Position/Hands-Free barcode scanners
All data is delivered twice per calendar year. Historical 2009 actuals/data is presented in each table/chart along with forecasts for 2010 through 2015.
A handheld barcode scanner is a handheld device used in a grip fashion 100% of the time, and is generally a wired or wireless gun/pistol grip form factor or pen/wand design. Presentation scanners (typically seen at the retail POS) can be used as stationary (hands-free) or handheld scanners, which are discussed and classified with stationary POS barcode scanners.
ABI Research segments the handheld barcode scanner market into the following main technology product classes including:
• Laser barcode scanners
• Linear imagers
• 2D imagers
• Pen/wand scanners
Please note: mobile computing devices equipped with barcode scanners/scan engines, such as rugged mobile computers and PDAs, are excluded from this study.
Stationary barcode scanners are also referred to and marketed as fixed-position scanners by the industry. This broad term easily differentiates these products from their handheld counterparts, but it does not provide specificity among the various stationary barcode scanner product lines, especially those offerings targeted at the retail vertical.
The focus of this report is finished, dedicated standalone stationary (fixed) and hands-free barcode scanners. As a result, scan engines are excluded from this analysis and sizing to avoid double counting of revenue from scan engines (once for the OEM engine and again as part of the final cost/revenue from the finished product).
