Netbooks, smartbooks and MIDs are relatively new devices in the UMD category, with screen sizes that sit between the smartphone and the laptop. Currently, most of the attention given to these devices is on consumer adoption. However their low cost, Wi-Fi and 3G network access options, browser, and large screen size will make them appealing to the business segment. Likely initial users include technicians, social service workers, and real estate agents. Initially, these devices will not find favor with enterprise IT since the majority don't use the Microsoft OS. Lack of 3G networks will limit uptake by business users in emerging markets. However, smaller businesses in industrialized markets will not be deterred by these issues, and in time many hurdles will be overcome through by cloud services for application access.

This study examines the drivers and inhibitors for business adoption of netbooks, smartbooks and MIDs. Survey data as well as competitive factors contribute to the review of this topic. Forecasts are provided for each form factor. They include device shipments, installed base and employment penetration across seven world regions. Also included are regional estimates for SMB and Enterprise shipments and installed base. Finally worldwide shipment and penetration forecasts are provided across seven industry verticals for each platform and include:
- Information
- Finance and Insurance
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services
- Educational Services
- Healthcare and Social Assistance
- Accommodation and Food Services
- Public Administration
