California Outlaws Power-Sucking TVs

California recently became the first state in the US to create its own energy-efficiency standard for television sets. The California Energy Commission has mandated that, starting in 2011, TV sets with screen sizes of less than 58 inches need to meet state limits on energy consumption in order to be sold within California; sets not meeting those limits will be barred from sale. The standard becomes even more stringent in 2013, limiting power consumption per TV set even more. The Commission says that sets sold in 2011 under these standards will consume 33% less electricity than the average TV sold today; in 2013, the stricter standard will have TVs consuming 49% less electricity than today’s average sets.
