In-building wireless is of interest to many different segments within the telecommunications vertical. Initially, IBW systems were used to extend coverage and improve signal strength within a building. With the arrival of smartphones and other data-hungry devices, and the increased data traffic on mobile networks, IBW has shifted its primary focus from providing better (mainly voice) signal coverage within a building, towards increasing capacity for data-centric and bandwidth-consuming services. IBW systems also help alleviate the load on base stations serving outdoor areas, thereby augmenting the network's capacity. With construction picking up after the global economic crisis, many buildings are receiving IBW installations, or are being designed for easy addition of an IBW system. IBW solutions can include Active Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), Passive DAS, repeaters, or networks of picocells or femtocells. These have been and continue to be major drivers for this technology.

This study covers DAS (both active and passive), repeaters, and the role currently played by picocells and femtocells in IBW. Although there is a focus on DAS at present, femtocells and picocells are covered in the report, including their current role in IBW systems and how they are leading to improved IBW performance. Repeaters, although not the main focus of the study, are also mentioned in the context of recent advancements and the value that they bring to IBW systems. A detailed breakdown of revenue, deployments, shipments by region, system type, vertical type and building size (square footage) is included in the report.
