Augmented Reality (the overlay of graphics onto a video stream or a heads-up display) has existed as a diverse market for more than 15 years, with customized applications in industrial automation, theme parks, sports television, military displays, and online marketing. Recently, an entirely new mass market has opened up in mobile handsets, due to the availability of video cameras, processors, GPS data, compasses, and accelerometers on handset platforms.

This study forecasts that new handheld platforms will transform the Augmented Reality ecosystem, with revenue associated with Augmented Reality growing from less than $10 million currently to more than $300 million in 2014. Mobile advertising revenue will begin slowly but will represent a large portion of the revenue growth in the 2013-2014 timeframe, with advertisers placing tags onto the navigation information displayed.
