Do Traditional M2M Cellular Embedded Module Vendors Have a Chance in the Connected CE Device Market?

In September 2009, Ericsson announced the launch of an embedded cellular module for connected CE devices. The module, the C 3607w, is Ericsson's fourth such product. The first three were targeted at notebook and netbook PCs. The C 3607w is about one-third the size of the previous Ericsson embedded modules and uses about 40% less power. The module uses the HSPA cellular air interface standard with downlink speeds up to 7.2 Mbps and uplink speeds up to 5.7 Mbps. Similar to many embedded cellular modules in the M2M market, the C 3607w works with a host processor in the connected CE device. Initially, Ericsson announced support for Intel's Atom processor but works with ARM-based processors as well. This ABI Insight examines the opportunity represented by the connected CE device market, analyzes the competition between M2M module vendors and notebook PC module vendors in this space, and offers recommendations on how M2M module vendors might best compete.
