Birds of Feather – Japanese Handset Vendor Alliance Seeks to Grow International Presence

Three Japanese handset vendors — NEC, Casio, and Hitachi — have agreed to combine their mobile phone operations in an effort to become the second largest Japanese handset vendor after Sharp. The new alliance seeks to produce 7 million domestic handsets and 5 million devices for the overseas market by the beginning of 2013. As part of the international strategy, the three-party alliance will focus on the US market where Casio and Hitachi currently supply handsets to Verizon Wireless.
