The End of Anti-Virus as We Know It?

Microsoft is in the process of enabling 75,000 free beta downloads of its new, free antivirus program which had gone under the codenamed “Morro.” The final version of the program is likely to be released before the end of this year. The program, now known as Microsoft Security Essentials, is a superset of an earlier product, Windows Defender. Reviewers have analyzed specific features and have tended to agree that the program falls into the low-end part of the market. This is not surprising, since the program apparently will continue to be offered free to legitimate Microsoft license holders of Windows 7, Vista, and XP.
