Emerging markets present both challenges and opportunities for the mobile suppliers serving them. The opportunity is that mobile is in many cases the only viable means of communications and information access for emerging markets. In addition there are still many markets where penetrations are less than 50%. While brisk subscriber growth will continue, income levels in many markets will not rise substantially to support greater use and adoption of mobile services. With competition relatively strong in most markets, the result is that average revenues decline as the lowest income customers adopt these services.

This study analyzes the economic and telecommunications demographics of emerging markets and the relationships of these demographics to mobile voice, messaging and data forecasts. It examines the mobile operator and supplier activities as well as consumer trends driving mobile services adoption and revenues. Finally, it considers the effect a prolonged world economic crisis could have on the mobile services industry in emerging markets. Analysis is segmented by five different emerging market regions and the BRIC countries.
