How Smart Does the Electrical Grid Need to Be?

The US electrical grid certainly needs modernizing: it is more than 100 years old, and has been built out based on guidelines in use since its inception. It contains more than 9,200 generating units with more than 1 million megawatts of generating capacity, connected to more than 300,000 miles of transmission lines. The grid is 99.97% reliable, which means power outages continue to occur, at a cost (in lost revenues and productivity) of at least $150 billion each year.
